Step 1: Pre-surgical Psychological Evaluation

Most insurance companies require that patients have a psychological evaluation prior to spinal surgery and implants of spinal chord stimulators and intrathecal morphine pumps. The purpose of the assessment is to identify risk factors that might negatively impact the success of the procedure. The fist part of the evaluation is a structured interview to obtain background information about your pain, medical history, emotional well-being and health behaviors. The second part is a true-false personality inventory and two short assessments that ask about pain management strategies and beliefs.

Step 2: Evaluation Results

Results of the evaluation are sent in a report to the referring pain management physician/surgeon. The content of the report includes information from your interview and test results.

Also, a feedback session with the evaluator will be scheduled if there appears to be significant risk factors that could interfere with a successful outcome. Possible evaluation recommendations include:

  • An acceptable candidate for the procedure without further behavioral health treatment.
  • Acceptable for surgery with further behavioral health treatment before the surgery.
  • Acceptable for surgery will further behavioral health treatment after surgery.
  • Consider delaying the surgery until after further evaluation and/or behavioral health treatment.

Step 1: Psychological Evaluation

The intent of the psychological evaluation prior to the surgery is to assess the patient’s readiness, motivation, and determination to make the essential behavior changes. A pre-surgery evaluation for bariatric surgery is often required by insurance companies and physicians. It is a way for the behavioral health specialist to ensure there are no risk factors that would potentially impede success of the procedure. There are two parts to an evaluation. The first includes an interview where we discuss your background information. The second part includes assessment of your personality and coping skills.

Step 2: Evaluation Results

Results of the evaluation are sent to the treating bariatric surgeon. These are usually available within 7 business days from the date of assessment by fax in order to facilitate the process. Feedback sessions are scheduled with patients where behavioral health treatment is recommended. Possible evaluation recommendations include:

  • Acceptable for surgery; (psychotherapy desired on an as needed basis; patients are invited to attend any group of interest.)
  • Acceptable for surgery; provide ongoing psychological treatment before, concurrent, of after surgery. This may include individual psychotherapy or a referral to a specific pre-operative or psot surgery group.
  • Delay consideration for surgery pending response to further psychological treatment or a re-evaluation
